About The Hull Civic Society
Birth of the Society
Hull Civic Society was founded in 1964, the original initiative coming from the Hull Junior Chamber of Commerce and Shipping. The first meeting took place in July of that year at the Ferens Art Gallery. Our first single-sheet newsletter was published in November 1965. The following year, the Society published its first report on the revival of the OId Town, which had fallen into serious decline. Now, the Old Town is enjoying a remarkable revival.
Our Aims
- To encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in Hull and the surrounding districts.
- To raise public interest in buildings and townscapes which contribute to the attractiveness of the city.
- To inform our members about the city by offering them an interesting programme of meetings and visits
- To scrutinise new planning applications, and to comment on them, in those cases where we feel that the proposed designs could be improved.
- To award ‘Good Marks’ to local developments which we feel show special merit.
- To encourage the restoration of historic buildings
